The South Jefferson Public Library is pleased to announce the fourth in its series of “Music at the
Library” performances. The Mark Cook trio, featuring special guest Chris Vadala, will perform a FREE
CONCERT on the lawn of the library beginning at 3pm on Sunday, August 30th.  

Dr. Mark Cook, formerly the Director of Jazz Studies at Shepherd University, now serves as Director of
Music Theory and Composition. He holds a B.M. ed. from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins
University, a Masters degree in Music Theory, and a Ph.D. in Music Theory from the Catholic University
of America. He teaches Music Theory, Aural Skills, History of Jazz, History of American Popular Music,
Jazz Lab, and Applied subjects including trumpet, jazz piano and improvisation, conducting and
composition. From 1986 to 2005 he served the Maryland State Unit, International Association of Jazz
Educators, Summer Jazz Consortium, first as a clinician, then as director. At Shepherd he directs the
annual Shepherd University Music Department Jazz Camp. As a Jazz Pianist, Dr. Cook performs
extensively throughout the region, and with the Shepherd University Faculty Jazz Trio, featuring
drummer Ronnie Shaw and bassist David Marsh. He co-leads his own group, Set Theory, with drummer
Marty Knepp. Their latest CD, Prime Form, has received critical acclaim. He has numerous arranging
and composing credits, most recently for Chris Vadala's CD, Out of the Shadows. For additional

Professor  Chris Vadala is the Director of Jazz Studies and Saxophone Professor at the University of
Maryland and previously held several academic appointments. A native of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he
graduated from the Eastman School of Music, earning the honor of the Performer's Certificate in
saxophone as well as a B.M. in Music Education, received an M.A. in clarinet from Connecticut College,
and pursued postgraduate study in woodwinds at Eastman. Mr. Vadala's performing career has been
highlighted by a long tenure as standout woodwind artist with the Internationally recognized Chuck
Mangione Quartet, which included performances in all 50 states and many foreign countries, with
performing credits on five gold and two platinum albums, plus two Grammy, one Emmy, one Georgie
(AGVA) and one Golden Globe Award. In addition, he has performed and/or recorded with such greats
as Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, B.B. King, Ella Fitzgerald, and many others. He also has the honor of
being included in a new publication, "The History of the Top 40 Sax Solos (1955-1998)." For more

Danny Tait earned a BA in music performance-percussion from Shepherd University, where he played
in several ensembles (including 2 years as drum-line section leader in marching band) and was a
private instructor with the Shepherd University Prep. Program. He has performed for many community
theater productions in Frederick, Hagerstown, Charles Town, and Martinsburg.  He was also the house
drummer with Royal Caribbean International's "Sovereign of the Seas" cruise ship.
 
Ryan Ellis is a Shepherd Music alumni who performs throughout the region.
The audience is encouraged to bring lawn chairs and refrain from smoking on library property.  
Lemonade and cookies will be served, though guests are welcome to bring non-alcoholic beverages of
their choice. In the event of inclement weather the "Show must go on," and the concert will be held in
the library's meeting room on the same date and at the same time.

The library is located at the corner of Summit Point Road and Church Street, 5 miles southwest of
Charles Town WV.  Come early and plan to visit the library and Shepherdstown artist Diane Steece’s
exhibition of colorful paintings on display in the meeting room.  For additional information contact Curt
